ATRIDE Builds the World’s Largest Real-World Dual-Belt Respiratory Dataset.

Nearly 10,000 hours of continuous thoracic and abdominal respiratory dynamics captured across 136 people in real-life conditions



The milestone creates a new foundation for Breathing Intelligence™ transforming continuous respiratory data into contextualized insights for healthcare, research, wellbeing and human performance.


Breathing is one of the most foundational signals the human body produces, yet respiratory health is still largely evaluated through snapshots: a spirometry test, a clinical assessment, a controlled exercise test, or an overnight stay in a sleep laboratory.

Those measurements are essential. But they capture moments.

ATRIDE has now created something fundamentally different: close to 10,000 hours of continuous respiratory dynamics recorded across 136 participants during real life, representing roughly 70 hours of monitoring per person.

What makes the dataset especially valuable is not only its scale, but the way the data is captured. Using the ANASA® Smart Breathing Shirt, ATRIDE measures thoracic and abdominal movement simultaneously through a dual-belt sensing architecture.

That matters because breathing is not a single movement. The thorax and abdomen work together as part of a coordinated mechanical system, and their timing, relative motion, and interaction can reveal information that is lost when respiration is reduced to a single metric such as breaths per minute.

A simple measurement can tell us how often someone breathes. Dual-belt respiratory dynamics can begin to reveal how someone breathes and how that changes over time.


Why Real-World Data Matters

The dataset was generated through the DigiLung project, supported by EISMEA under the EU’s Interregional Innovation Investments (I3) Instrument.

Its scientific value comes from the fact that these measurements were captured in the wild while participants were walking, sleeping, working, exercising, resting, and recovering.

That distinction is important because physiology changes with context. A respiratory pattern observed while sitting in a laboratory may look very different during physical activity, sleep, fatigue, stress, or illness.

Continuous real-world monitoring therefore makes it possible to study respiratory behavior as a timeline rather than a sequence of isolated tests.

That opens up important research questions: How stable is an individual respiratory baseline across several days? How does thoracoabdominal coordination change during exertion or recovery? Which variations are normal for that person, and which may be physiologically meaningful? Could longitudinal respiratory patterns contribute to new digital biomarkers or support earlier recognition of deterioration?

These questions become far more accessible when breathing is observed continuously rather than intermittently.


From Respiratory Data to Breathing Intelligence™

Collecting nearly 10,000 hours of data is not the objective. Understanding it is.

ATRIDE is using this dataset as the foundation for Breathing Intelligence™: a platform designed to transform continuous respiratory signals into contextualized information.

The same respiratory pattern can mean different things in different settings. A change in breathing mechanics may have one significance for a person living with COPD, another for an athlete during exertion, another during sleep, and another during rehabilitation.

A Wearable Built for Continuous Respiratory Science

The ANASA® Smart Breathing Shirt was designed to make this kind of monitoring possible outside specialized clinical environments. Its stretchable e-textile sensors continuously capture thoracic and abdominal movement in a wearable format intended for prolonged use.

The concept is similar to what the Holter monitor brought to cardiology: instead of observing physiology at one moment, follow it across time.
